The Deputy Minister for Energy, Salome Makamba, presented the ministry's budget implementation report for the first quarter of the 2026/27 financial year to the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Energy and Minerals, according to Daily News. The session took place at the parliamentary premises in Dodoma, with Subira Mgalu chairing the committee.

The report covered the electricity and renewable energy subsectors, including research, production and use of power drawn from renewable and alternative sources available in the country, Daily News reports.

Why it matters

The quarterly review gives lawmakers a formal checkpoint on how the ministry is spending its allocated funds and whether planned work in the power sector is moving on schedule. Because the report spans both electricity and renewables, it touches on the country's efforts to widen access to power and diversify where that power comes from.

The committee's scrutiny also extends to two institutions central to the sector. Budget implementation reports for the Tanzania Electric Supply Company Limited (TANESCO) and the Rural Energy Agency (REA) were presented alongside the ministry's own, reflecting their roles in developing electricity infrastructure and extending energy access across the country.

Projects and programmes under review

According to Daily News, the report addressed the implementation of the Second Phase of the Electricity Supply Project for Hamlets, known as Phases IIA and IIB (HEP IIA and HEP IIB). It also covered the Strong Grid Project and clean cooking energy initiatives.

These items sit within the broader picture of budget execution the ministry laid out for the committee, alongside the research and production work in renewable and alternative energy.

Who attended

The meeting drew members of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Energy and Minerals. Also present were the Permanent Secretary responsible for Electricity and Renewable Energy at the Ministry of Energy, Engineer Felshesmi Mramba, and the ministry's Director of Policy and Planning, Petro Lyatuu.

TANESCO Managing Director Lazaro Twange and REA Director General Engineer Hassan Saidy attended as well. Technical experts from the Ministry of Energy and its affiliated institutions rounded out the participants, Daily News reports.

The purpose of the gathering, according to the outlet, was to review budget implementation and assess the activities carried out in the electricity and renewable energy subsectors during the first quarter of the 2026/27 financial year.

What to watch: whether the committee's findings on first-quarter spending prompt any adjustments to the ministry's plans for the remainder of the financial year.
